the Ibanez AW54CE, which is a very popular and highly-regarded model in Ibanez's Artwood series. The "CE" in its name signifies that it's the Cutaway and Electric version of the AW54, making it a versatile choice for players who need to plug in and perform.
It takes all the great attributes of the acoustic-only AW54 and adds the necessary features for amplified performance and upper-fret access.
Cutaway Dreadnought Body Shape:
The AW54CE maintains the powerful Dreadnought body shape, delivering strong projection, a full low end, and a rich, resonant tone, making it excellent for strumming and flatpicking.
The crucial addition here is the Venetian cutaway. This elegantly curved cutaway provides unrestricted access to the upper frets (typically beyond the 14th fret), allowing for lead lines, solos, and more complex chord voicings higher up the neck. This is a significant advantage for performers.
Solid Okoume Top, Okoume Back, and Sides:
Like the acoustic AW54, the AW54CE features a solid Okoume top. Okoume, an African hardwood, is a fantastic tonewood that shares characteristics with mahogany – warmth, clarity, and a strong midrange – but often with a slightly more open and airy feel. A solid top is vital for tone, as it resonates more freely and improves with age and play.
The back and sides are typically made of laminated Okoume. While not solid, the laminated construction contributes to the guitar's durability and stability, making it less susceptible to humidity and temperature changes, which is a real benefit for gigging musicians.
"Open Pore" Natural Finish (OPN):
The guitar boasts an Open Pore Natural (OPN) finish. This thin, matte finish not only enhances the natural look and feel of the Okoume wood but also allows the soundboard to vibrate with less restriction, contributing to a more resonant and open acoustic tone. It also provides a comfortable, non-glossy feel on the neck.
Nyatoh Neck with Laurel Fretboard and Bridge:
The neck is crafted from Nyatoh wood, offering good stability and contributing to the guitar's overall tonal balance.
The Laurel (or sometimes Ovangkol) fretboard and bridge provide a dark, smooth playing surface that feels good under the fingers and contributes to the guitar's sustain and clarity.
The neck profile is designed for comfort, and the 43mm (1.69") nut width is a standard size that feels familiar to most steel-string acoustic players.
