If you’ve ever browsed the gear boards or spent time around vintage tube amp techs, you’ve probably heard whispers about converting old public address (PA) heads into ferocious guitar amplifiers. The Bogen Challenger CHB-35A is absolute royalty in that world—a rugged, American-made vintage PA head from the late 1960s and 1970s that can be turned into a killer, hand-wired tube guitar amplifier for a fraction of the cost of a vintage Marshall or Fender.

Originally manufactured by Bogen (a mainstay in American school auditoriums, churches, and factories), these units were built like tanks. Today, they are prized by players, modders, and studio engineers looking for unique, gritty, vintage tube character.

Power Tubes (7868): The power section runs on a pair of 7868 beam power pentodes. The 7868 tube is closely related to the famous 7591 (found in vintage Ampegs) and shares tonal DNA with 6L6s and EL34s. It produces a punchy, mid-forward sound with a tight low end and a very sweet, aggressive breakup when cranked.

Preamp Tubes (12AX7 & 6EU7): The preamp section uses a mix of standard high-gain dual triodes. Depending on the exact revision year, you’ll find 12AX7s or 6EU7s (which are essentially 12AX7s with a different pinout, known for being super low-noise).

Rectifier: Solid-state rectification gives the amp a stiff, fast attack with a punchy low-end response, keeping it from getting too muddy when pushed hard.
