The Carvin AE185 is one of the most famous "hybrid" guitars ever made. Introduced in 1994, it was designed specifically for guitarists who need to switch between convincing acoustic tones and high-gain electric sounds in a single instrument

The "secret sauce" of the AE185 is its dual pickup system and sophisticated wiring:

• Electric Side: Dual humbuckers. These provide traditional electric tones ranging from jazz to hard rock.
• Acoustic Side: An under-saddle piezo pickup (LR Baggs or Carvin F60) paired with an ebony acoustic-style bridge.
• Dual Outputs: It features two output jacks. You can run one cable to a guitar amp and another to a PA or acoustic amp, or use a single cable and blend the sounds.

The AE185 has a busy but intuitive control set:

1. Master Volume: Controls overall output.
2. Pan/Blend Pot: Allows you to sweep between 100% electric and 100% acoustic (or any mix in between).
3. Active Tone Controls: Separate tone knobs for the electric and acoustic signals.
