Pre-War Guitars Co. OM-18 Mahogany – Natural

Pre-War Guitars Co. has earned an exceptional reputation among acoustic players by building instruments inspired by the light construction, responsiveness, and character of great pre-war American guitars. This OM-18 Mahogany captures that philosophy in one of the most versatile acoustic body sizes ever developed.

Built in North Carolina, this OM-18 features a torrefied Adirondack spruce top paired with Honduran mahogany back and sides. It’s a classic combination known for a strong fundamental, excellent note separation, and the dry, immediate response players often seek from vintage-style mahogany acoustics. The Adirondack top adds excellent dynamic range and headroom, responding easily to a light touch while retaining clarity when played aggressively.

Pre-War builds these guitars with vintage-inspired construction throughout, including forward-shifted scalloped bracing, a traditional dovetail neck joint, and an exceptionally thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The Honduran mahogany neck is paired with an ebony fingerboard, while the 25.4" scale length, approximately 1 3/4" nut width, and 2 5/16" bridge string spacing provide the comfortable feel and generous right-hand spacing traditionally associated with an OM.

Appointments are appropriately understated and vintage-inspired, including an ebony bridge, bone nut and saddle, tortoise-style pickguard, traditional Style-18 cosmetics, and Waverly open-gear tuners. A two-way adjustable truss rod provides modern adjustability while maintaining the instrument’s traditional construction and character.

An important part of the Pre-War aesthetic is the company’s deliberately aged finish. Finish checking, rubbed areas, and other signs of simulated age are intentionally incorporated to give these guitars the appearance and feel of instruments that have already spent decades being played. Buyers unfamiliar with Pre-War guitars should understand that much of the visible checking and distressing shown in our photographs is intentional and inherent to the way these instruments are built and finished.

This example presents very well and displays the expected factory-aged and distressed character throughout. In addition to the intentional aging, there are normal scratches and playing marks visible on the back and sides. There is also a noticeable cosmetic scuff on the bass-side shoulder/upper-bout edge, which is clearly documented in our photographs. There are no known repairs to the instrument. As always, we encourage buyers to review the detailed photographs closely as part of the condition description.

The OM body makes this an exceptionally versatile acoustic. It has the balance and articulation needed for fingerstyle playing, while the Adirondack top provides enough projection and headroom for a strong flatpick attack. The mahogany body keeps individual notes focused and articulate, making the guitar equally comfortable with blues, folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriter accompaniment, and more intricate acoustic work.

For the player attracted to the sound and feel of an exceptional vintage OM but looking for the reliability and adjustability of a modern American-made instrument, the Pre-War OM-18 occupies a particularly compelling place in the acoustic world. It is lightweight, responsive, and deliberately uncomplicated: spruce, mahogany, and traditional construction doing exactly what they are supposed to do.
