The Martin Special D-18 VTS with OHSC takes the classic mahogany dreadnought formula and adds one of Martin’s most desirable tonewood upgrades: a VTS-treated Adirondack spruce top.
Martin’s Vintage Tone System (VTS) thermally ages the spruce to approximate some of the characteristics of naturally seasoned vintage wood. Paired with solid mahogany back and sides, the result is a strong, articulate dreadnought voice with excellent projection, clear mids, crisp trebles and a controlled low end. The Adirondack top also gives this model plenty of headroom for aggressive strumming and flatpicking.
The Special D-18 VTS uses a traditional 1 11/16" nut width and a comfortable low-profile neck, giving it a slightly more familiar vintage-inspired feel than many contemporary Martins. Rosewood is used for the fingerboard and bridge, with understated Style-18 appointments keeping the focus on the woods and tone. Comparable examples are documented with a mahogany neck, dovetail neck joint and bone nut and saddle.
Features
The combination of Adirondack spruce, VTS treatment and mahogany construction makes the Special D-18 VTS particularly appealing to players who love the fundamental character of a D-18 but want additional projection, responsiveness and vintage-inspired character.
