The Snake Oil Fine Instruments: The Very Thing is an analog overdrive and boost pedal developed by Rob Chapman and Lee Anderton (founders of Chapman Guitars). It is part of their boutique "Snake Oil" line, which is known for its distinct Victorian-era aesthetic and high-quality UK construction.

The Circuit & Sound

While its design is eccentric, its heart is a classic 4558 dual op-amp circuit—the same legendary chip found in the Tube Screamer. However, the "The Very Thing" is voiced differently than a standard TS-style pedal:

• Grittier Texture: It offers more "growl" and harmonic bite than a typical transparent overdrive, moving into a rich, mid-gain territory that works well for classic rock.
• Symmetrical Clipping: This provides a smooth, tube-like saturation that remains articulate even when the gain is pushed.
• Unique Tone Control: The tone knob is known for its unusual sweep—it stays relatively subtle through most of its range before suddenly acting as a high-pass filter at the extreme end, which can be useful for thinning out dark humbuckers or achieving a "lo-fi" radio effect.
