1971 Harmony H165 Mahogany Folk Guitar

Built in 1971 during the final chapter of Harmony's historic Chicago production era, this H165 is a classic American-made folk guitar that delivers exceptional vintage character and value. As overseas competition began reshaping the guitar market, Harmony continued producing well-crafted instruments using quality materials, and the H165 remains one of the standout examples from that period.

Constructed entirely from attractive ribbon-grain mahogany, the guitar features a ladder-braced top paired with matching mahogany back and sides. The understated design emphasizes function over flash, with simple appointments including a rosette and decorative soundhole ring. Its warm vintage aesthetic is complemented by a black-painted headstock bearing the iconic Harmony script logo.

The neck, likely poplar or basswood, is fitted with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard adorned with pearl position markers. An adjustable truss rod provides neck stability and setup flexibility, while the original tuning machines remain in place and function smoothly. The original Brazilian rosewood bridge employs Harmony's clever pinless-string design, making string changes quick and straightforward.

Condition & Recent Service

This guitar remains largely original, with the exception of a replacement saddle. Recent professional work includes:

  • Neck reset
  • Back crack repair with internal cleats
  • Bridge removal and reinstallation using hot hide glue
  • Removal of original bridge bolts with pearl inlay replacements
  • Pickguard reattachment
  • Tuner cleaning and lubrication
  • Fret leveling, crowning, and dressing

Cosmetically, the instrument shows the expected signs of over five decades of use, including minor dings, scratches, and finish wear. There is also evidence of a previously repaired impact-related crack on the back.

Tone & Playability

The H165 offers the rich, woody voice that has made all-mahogany vintage guitars so desirable. It produces a strong low end, warm and focused midrange, and excellent projection without harshness. Combined with its comfortable neck profile and easy-playing setup, it is equally at home accompanying vocals or handling fingerstyle and flatpicking duties.

For players seeking an authentic vintage American acoustic with character, playability, and impressive tone, the Harmony H165 continues to represent one of the best values in the vintage guitar market.
