Hey everyone, JP here from Tone Tailors.
If you’re a Paul Reed Smith fan, you already know that PRS has mastered the art of the guitar finish. But there is a tier of exclusivity that sits just outside the standard catalog—something known to collectors and players as Sprayer’s Choice.
The name says it all. This is what happens when the master finishers at the PRS factory in Stevensville, Maryland get to go completely off the menu. They select a premium piece of maple, and instead of following a standard production color template like a Charcoal Burst or a McCarty Sunburst, they follow their own artistic instinct.
Because these aren't part of a formal production run, they are incredibly limited. In many cases, you are looking at a one-of-a-kind finish—meaning you get an instrument that literally no one else on the planet owns. It is the perfect intersection of world-class playability and a unique, serialized piece of fine art.
We recently had a spectacular example come through the shop on trade: a used PRS Custom 24 that was born from a Sprayer's Choice run.
This particular guitar features a deep, incredibly dark black-to-green burst with a subtle green sparkle. But the real surprise is on the back: it features a slick black satin neck. Typically, a feature like a painted satin neck is reserved strictly for higher-tier Core level series or special runs, but because it was a Sprayer's Choice instrument, that premium feature got filtered down into this specific CE line build.
When the master finishers go off the menu, you often get rare, cross-series feature combinations that you won't find anywhere else.
We know that when you are hunting for a PRS, you usually have a highly specific vision in mind. Whether it’s a exact neck carve (like Pattern Thin or Pattern Vintage), a specific set of humbuckers, or that holy grail color you saw in a forum photo once, that’s where we come in.
Don’t just guess based on what we currently have hanging on the display walls. If you are ready to find "the one," reach out to us directly at Tone Tailors.
